Describes boat building in military, World War II; master boat builder for Pacific Dry Dock/Crowley Maritime in East Bay, 1950-1979; traces great changes in shipbuilding over time; master model ship builder whose replicas are widely known in maritime circles.

Abstract

The records of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Local lodge 6 include minutes, administrative records, membership records, contracts and documentation of relations with government agencies, along with materials from conventions and the negotiations for the master shipbuilding contract of the Pacific Coast Metal Trades Council.

Scope and Contents

Consists of additions to the records of Local lodge 6, including minutes of local councils, materials on women's safety, and the office files of Ed Rainbow.

Abstract Bulk of the material consists of the records of International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Local 9, (Vallejo, Calif.) Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Includes a sampling of grievance cases, documenting issues such as drug cases and denial of security clearances, in some cases for psychiatric reasons (which in turn meant loss of employment); and privacy, search and seizure.The records document the intersection between a civilian workforce and military culture. Also included are union/employer agreements, conference summaries, books on shipbuilding in WWII, dues books and one waterfront pass, as well as minutes, correspondence, agreements, conference summaries, records of predecessor organizations and of the Pacific Coast Committee of Marine Carpenters.
